These can be influenced by hormones, genetics, medical conditions, sleep deprivation, diet, and environment.
Disclaimer: You don’t have to constantly be changing up your skin care products to address the slightest change in things, this is to help you be aware and find the balance.
Hormones: Changes with age as you go through life changes e.g. menopause, pregnancy.
Medication: may cause sensitivity.
Sleep deprivation: skin doesn’t recover properly and is prone to dryness or stress hormones can be released causing the skin to be oily.
Diet: High processed food diet can amp up oil production by the skin.
How to determine:
Wash your face with a basic cleanser and wait about 30mins with applying anything and see how your skin feels.
If it feels;
1. Fine, you have normal skin.
2. Tight, you’re dry skinned.
3. Shiny, that’s oily skin.
4. Shiny on the T-Zone (forehead, nose area and chin) and dry on the cheeks, it’s combination skin.
5. Irritated, that’s sensitive skin.
PS: YOUR SKIN TYPE COULD CHANGE DEPENDING ON THE ENVIRONMENT AND/ OR CLIMATE.
Dry skin
Feels tight, fine wrinkles, looks flaky.
Hydrate your skin to prevent or reduce that transepidermal water loss e.g. rose water spray from time to time through the day.
Use moisturizers that have oils in them.
Oily skin
Characterized by enlarged pores (large oil glands, moisturizers tend to feel greasy/oily, shiny skin.
Myth: Applying products makes you more oily —- oil production is governed by genetics and hormones.
What happens is that applying some products will make you feel greasy because the base is already oily.
Use of clay masks helps de-grease the face e.g bentonite clay. This helps with acne too.
Oil-free moisturizers will feel more comfortable on your skin. Please don’t skip moisturizers as this will result in production of more sebum.
Combination skin
Oily T-Zone, matte/dry cheeks.
Use light weight moisturizers.
Sensitive skin
Redness, stingy, burning, itchy, hyper-irritable skin and or tingly.
Affected by changed in temperature, laundry detergent.
May have been causes by an over-use of products e.g acne treatment.
Having minimalistic skin care routine is helpful. Products that’ll help soothe the skin like aloe vera or green tea based products.
